Leadership for Innovation Leading research groups towards innovation Motivation Thorough scientific knowledge, experience, and expertise are cornerstones for generating new insights and manage research groups and programmes. However, the capacity to successfully lead research groups towards innovation is quite a different challenge. The broader context as well as the social dynamics rising from structural, cultural, as well as behavioral factors are directly influencing the potential for innovation, be it in a favorable or be it in a dysfunctional way. In scientific practice, leadership is less a question of abstract principles or virtues, however, it is much more about a question of how to concretely … develop robust and reliable work relations, foster curiosity, openness, and intrinsic motivation, deal with the typical (extrinsic) reward structures in science, provide autonomy as well as guidance for scholars, balance collaboration and competition, create a milieu that helps to leverage the power of diversity of roles and perspectives, align research and career perspectives, decide on the framing of tasks and projects, etc. The course is meant to provide professors at University of St. Gallen with insights on leadership and innovation from the perspective of the social sciences. Structural, cultural, as well as behavior-related factors will be adressed. The full-day course will be complemented by a ½ day follow-up session(about 3 months after the 1-day course) and will provide opportunities to reflect on experiences made when applying learnings from the seminar. Target Group HSG Faculty: Full Professors, Associate ProfessorsMethodology Conceptual inputs and case studies provided by the speaker will create a common ground for the reflection of the participants’ cases and experiences. We strive for a good balance of conceptual input and space for discussion /work in smaller groups. Participants will be asked to work on a short preparatory task before the seminar that will allow the facilitator to fine-tune contents of the seminar.
